ANNOUNCING THE OPENING OF DA VINCI ~ OUR NEW EXHIBITION!

The Discovery Center of Idaho is proud to announce the opening of a major traveling exhibition, Leonardo da Vinci: Man-Inventor-Genius & Man-Artist-Genius. Including sixty-one invention models and twenty-three replicated artistic master pieces; da Vinci is an educational exhibition of unequaled fascination.

Made to scale and produced by the artisan Italian family who have been building the inventions to da Vinci specifications for two centuries, the models of Man-Inventor-Genius include interactive inventions and machines from the four codices: flight, civil machines, hydraulics and engineering and military machines. The craftsmanship and beauty of the materials used by da Vinci are represented just as they were in the 15th century.

Complimenting the invention models, Man-Artist-Genius combines made-to-scale replicas of da Vinci's masterpiece paintings with films of da Vinci's life and an audio video guide. Through this exhibition, museum goers will have the rare opportunity of considering how the masterpieces relate to the artist's love of science and nature.

The exhibition opens to the public June 14, 2014. Presented by the Micron Foundation and sponsored by the Julius C. Jeker Foundation and the Henry W. Morrison Foundation.

Admission prices will be as follows for the duration of the exhibition:

  • Adults, $15
  • Youth & Seniors, $10
  • Children (2 and under), FREE

  • All DCI members will be admitted for just $3 throughout the exhibition!

Which leads us to...

DCI MEMBERSHIPS ARE ON SALE NOW THROUGH APRIL 6!

It pays to be a member of DCI, and right now Family and Grandparent Level memberships are $5 off the regular price. Our memberships are already one of the best deals in town. Your decision to support Idaho's only hands-on science center means hours of family fun, learning and entertainment.

With the blockbuster exhibition da Vinci: Man-Inventor-Genius & Man-Artist-Genius opening in June, there are even more reasons to become a member. Regular museum admission will be $15 for adults and $10 for youth and seniors during da Vinci, but members will pay only $3! Members will also receive discounts on tickets to special events - including an upcoming lecture series, Adult Nights and more. Already a member? NICK & TESLA'S BOOK CLUB - Where Science, discovery, imagination and experimentation collide!

April 30, May 28 & June 25, 2014, from 3:30-4:30pm

We've partnered with Rediscovered Books and developed a book club for kiddos based on the wildly popular Nick & Tesla's books! Here's the scoop:

  • Purchase your tickets at DCI or from Rediscovered Books. You will receive the book, a book club ticket, and a take home activity kit for $18.
  • A ticket (and all that comes with it) must be purchased for each individual meeting you wish to attend.
  • There will be a hands-on science experiment during the meeting, with instructions and materials to replicate it at home.
  • There will be one "class" per book, for a total of three.
  • Each ticket/book will need to be purchased in advance, so that kiddos have a chance to read the books before each meeting.
  • Perfect for your 9-12 year old!

SUMMER CAMPS @ DCI

Summer Camps at DCI offer kids going into grades 1-6 an opportunity to delve into topics that are exciting and fun, while providing hands-on, real world experiences. Dig into dinosaurs, build a robot or be among the first to tour the fascinating artwork and inventions of Leonardo da Vinci. The wide variety of classes we offer means that science summer camp really can be for everyone! Follow this link for a complete, printable schedule of camps.

IDAHO GIVES, MAY 1, 2014

This statewide day of giving is the perfect opportunity for you to support the nonprofit organization(s) that are near and dear to you - and it's quickly approaching! Be on the lookout for more information soon. In the meantime, keep us in mind when making your decision about where to give. We appreciate it!

SAVE THE DATE FOR ADULT NIGHT IN MAY!

One night, every other month, we close up shop to anyone under the age of 21. We bring in live music, local food and drinks (including the "adult" kind) and tailor the evening around a central topic sure to pique the interest of our (ahem) more mature guests. Cycling. Brewing. Illumination. You get the idea.

We invite experts to give short talks or demonstrations, do experiments and shows, and guests have the opportunity to speak with those in the know as the night goes on. Adult Nights at DCI boil down to STEM learning, socializing and a good time all rolled into one great night. Don't miss out!

On the agenda for May 15, 2014 ~ The Science of Sex. Who knew evolutionary biology could be so fascinating?! Trust us, you'll learn more than you can imagine about the wild and wacky world of reproduction during this installment of our Adult Night series.

Clarifying Racking

We met for the post-ML racking today for clarification and racked the merlot and cabernet. Both were good, but the merlot is extra tasty this year. :)

We racked:

- ~75G merlot, including mixing in the carboys and stainless containers.

- ~52G cabernet, plus we mixed in 5G malbec to give us extra cabernet for topping.

We added ~15ppm meta to the wine before racking it back into the barrels, plus Troy added a pinch of extra meta in the platypus containers for topping.

We have the malbec (WA and ID) left for tomorrow plus the Sangio/cab and WA Clone 6 cab.  Bob, Ray, Mike and Lee will work on that on Monday.

Everything went very smoothly. We're getting good at racking!

Bob's new barrel cradle is a great design and is working great.

Ray: Bottler

The bottler came mail order from EC Kraus.  I purchased it blindly with absolutely no information as to how it worked, its quality or reliability, or anything else.  I just knew that a new bottler was badly needed and the sooner the better.  The description said that it was perfect for 50 to 500 gal batches.  Good enough for me.  It was delivered for $131.  I subsequently bought a couple hoses to fit it for another $22, but the hoses have large enough diameter and are long enough for multiple uses around the winery.  The first bottling proved that it probably was worth the investment.  It filled about 25 cases in an hour with only one person operating it. That should satisfy our needs for the foreseeable future.
